Health experts have raised concern over the very low rate of influenza vaccination in India, which currently covers just 1.5% of the population. Speaking at a panel discussion organised by Zydus Lifesciences in Bengaluru, doctors said that seasonal flu continues to be overlooked despite progress in controlling other childhood diseases under the Universal Immunisation Programme.
Doctors highlighted the need to protect vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, people with weak immunity, and those suffering from chronic illnesses. They warned that influenza is often underestimated even though it can lead to severe and sometimes fatal illness. However, they admitted that frequent changes in the flu virus make annual vaccination drives both logistically and financially difficult to implement.
Medical professionals also cautioned that uncontrolled spread of influenza could increase the risk of viral mutations. They stressed that vaccination for healthcare workers should be made mandatory by institutions to safeguard both patients and staff. The experts urged the government to include influenza vaccination in the national immunisation schedule to ensure wider protection.
