Faridabad (Haryana): Amrita Hospital in Faridabad Achieves Major Medical Milestone with First-Ever Hand Transplants in North India. In late December 2023, groundbreaking surgeries lasting approximately 17 hours each were conducted, signifying a crucial advancement in the field of medical science. Gautam Tayal, a 64-year-old from Delhi, and 19-year-old Devansh Gupta, also from Delhi, underwent intricate hand transplantation procedures at Amrita Hospital, as announced in the hospital's statement. Significantly, the Hospital reported that this marks the inaugural occurrence in India and only the second worldwide, where a recipient of a kidney transplant has undergone a hand transplant. Gautam Tayal, who had received a kidney transplant ten years prior, encountered the unfortunate loss of his left hand in an industrial accident two years ago. The transplanted hand, procured from a 40-year-old donor who was declared brain dead, was transported to Amrita Hospital from Thane, in close proximity to Mumbai. Dr. Mohit Sharma, Professor & Head of the Centre for Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Amrita Hospital said, “To achieve union of the two hands, we had to connect two bones, two arteries, 25 tendons, and 5 nerves.” Gautam Tayal conveyed his gratitude saying, "This hand transplant has gifted me a new lease of life. I am so happy and grateful that God, and Amrita doctors, have given me a second chance to live my life to the full." As per the hospital's statement, Devansh Gupta, a 19-year-old who suffered the loss of both upper limbs and the right lower limb in a train accident three years ago, underwent a hand transplant procedure receiving a pair of hands from a 33-year-old donor in Surat. Emphasizing the challenges, Dr. Anil Murarka, Senior Consultant at the Centre for Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Amrita Hospital Faridabad, explained, “The hand transplant becomes more challenging as the level of amputation increases.” Gupta expressed his joy, proclaiming, “My prayers have finally been answered by God.” Praising the medical team, Swami Nijamritananda Puri, Administrative Director of Amrita Hospital, remarked, “In a brief period, Amrita Hospital has become one of the world's leading institutions for hand transplants.” Dr. Sanjeev Singh, Medical Director, further added, “This is a major medical feat.” The collaborative success of the surgeries was achieved through the concerted efforts of a multidisciplinary team, comprising specialists in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Anesthesiology, Orthopaedics, Nephrology, Pathology, Physical Medicine, along with dedicated nursing and administrative personnel. The release highlighted key contributors in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, including consultants such as Dr. Shikha Gupta, Dr. Devajyoti Guin, Dr. Srilekha Reddy, Dr. Vasundhra Jain, and Dr. Arun Sharma. The Department of Anesthesiology, under the leadership of Dr. Mukul Kapoor and with support from Dr. Shaloo Garg, Dr. Niti Gulati, and Dr. Ketan Kulkarni, played a crucial role in overseeing the patient's care during both the procedure and the post-operative period, as mentioned in the statement. Ensuring rapid bone union for limb stability, Orthopaedic surgeons Dr. Mrinal Sharma and Dr. Priyadarshi Amit, along with their team, played a pivotal role in the surgical process. Within the field of Nephrology, Dr. Zacharia Paul, Dr. Urmila Anand, and Dr. Kunal Gandhi played essential roles in managing crucial immunosuppression to prevent limb rejection. Under the guidance of Dr. Gaurav and Dr. Arruparrna Sen Gupta, the Pathology Department played a vital role in diagnosing limb rejection, according to the official statement. The Physical Medicine Department, led by Dr. Ansar Ul Haq, supervised the patient's rehabilitation post-transplantation, and Dr. Charu Dua took charge of the patients' nutrition, as mentioned in the statement. In expressing their gratitude, the medical community at Amrita Hospital credited the divine blessings of Amma, the institute's founder, recognizing her as the linchpin behind this remarkable surgical achievement.
