In a rare and courageous medical intervention, three doctors and local residents joined forces to save the life of a critically injured accident victim on a roadside in Ernakulam, Kerala. The incident took place on Sunday evening at Valiyakulam in Udayamperoor, where a motorcycle and scooter collided, leaving several people hurt.

Among the injured was a young man named Lineesh, who sustained severe injuries to his face. Due to blood clots in his airway, he was struggling to breathe, and immediate action was necessary to prevent respiratory failure.

Dr Thomas Peter and his wife Dr Didiya, both from Indira Gandhi Hospital in Ernakulam, along with Dr Manoop, a cardiothoracic surgeon from Kottayam Medical College, happened to be nearby when the accident occurred. They quickly assessed the situation and realized that the victim’s airway was blocked and that waiting to reach a hospital could cost him his life.

With the help of police and local bystanders, the doctors performed an emergency cricothyrotomy right there on the roadside. Using a simple razor blade and a plastic drinking straw, they opened the airway to restore breathing. Once stabilized, the young man was shifted to Welcare Hospital in Vyttila for further treatment.

The incident highlights not only swift medical judgment by the doctors but also the crucial role of local assistance in critical moments. The teamwork between medical professionals, police, and residents helped avert a likely tragedy.
