Pilibhit authorities have found five doctors guilty of medical negligence following the death of 34-year-old Kheelawati Shankar. She had undergone a hysterectomy on July 7, 2024, at a private hospital, but a surgical sponge was accidentally left inside her abdomen. This critical error led to severe health complications, ultimately resulting in septicemia, which claimed her life on December 5, 2024.
An investigation conducted by the chief medical officer revealed serious lapses, including failure to follow proper surgical procedures and an attempt to conceal the mistake. The report also pointed out errors in post-operative care and diagnosis, which worsened the patient’s condition. These findings have been submitted to the district administration for further action.
Following the report, the district magistrate has recommended administrative and legal measures against the responsible doctors. The state medical administration has also been alerted to take necessary steps to prevent such incidents in the future. Authorities are now reviewing protocols to ensure better medical safety and accountability in hospitals.
