The Jammu and Kashmir government has directed doctors who have overstayed their deputation at Government Medical Colleges (GMC) in Jammu and Srinagar to return to their original postings in the Directorate of Health Services. This move aims to address the shortage of medical staff in peripheral hospitals, ensuring better healthcare services in rural areas. The order specifically targets medical officers and consultants without super-specializations who have exceeded the permissible tenure of four years for deputation and three years for tenure postings without proper authorization.
Health Secretary Dr. Abid Rasheed Shah emphasized that these doctors are to be considered relieved from their positions at the GMCs immediately and must report back to their respective directorates. The order also instructs the principals and Drawing and Disbursing Officers (DDOs) of the medical colleges to cease salary disbursements to the repatriated doctors. Non-compliance with this directive will be treated as a financial irregularity, potentially leading to disciplinary action against the concerned officials.
This decision follows concerns about the unequal distribution of medical personnel, with many doctors remaining in urban medical colleges beyond their authorized tenure, leaving rural hospitals understaffed. By enforcing the repatriation order, the government aims to redistribute medical staff more equitably, enhancing healthcare delivery in underserved regions and upholding administrative discipline in postings.
