Kolkata continues to struggle with poor air quality as doctors warn that the city’s residents are facing long-term health risks from constant exposure to polluted air. Medical experts say that carbon particles suspended in the atmosphere are entering deep into the lungs and slowly creating black deposits that resemble the damage seen in long-term smokers. They caution that this build-up can reduce lung capacity and trigger chronic inflammation.
Hospitals across the city are witnessing a rise in respiratory issues, with many patients reporting prolonged coughs, breathlessness, and worsening asthma symptoms. Children, senior citizens, and people with existing lung conditions are among the most affected. Doctors note that even minor viral infections are now taking longer to resolve because the lungs are constantly irritated by polluted air.
Another concern highlighted by specialists is the risk of carbon dioxide retention. With airways narrowing due to continuous exposure to pollutants, some individuals may experience difficulties expelling carbon dioxide effectively, leading to fatigue, headaches, and disturbed sleep. Physicians describe this as part of a growing pattern of “urban lung” problems becoming common among city dwellers.
Health experts advise residents to limit outdoor activity when the air quality index dips into poor or very poor categories and recommend wearing N95 masks when stepping outside. They also encourage people to maintain good indoor ventilation and seek timely medical attention if respiratory symptoms persist. As winter sets in, doctors warn that the combined effect of stagnant air and rising pollution levels may worsen health complications if precautions are not taken.
