Bengaluru is witnessing a rise in COVID-19 cases due to new Omicron subvariants, including JN.1, LF.7, and NB.1.8.1. Doctors report that these variants are highly transmissible but generally cause mild symptoms such as cough, cold, fever, fatigue, and headache. Most patients recover at home without needing hospital care. However, elderly individuals and those with existing health conditions are advised to take extra precautions.
As of May 19, India reported 164 new COVID-19 cases, with 257 active cases nationwide. In Karnataka, 92 cases have been detected, including 68 in Bengaluru. The state government has made mask-wearing mandatory for people over 60 and those with heart or respiratory issues in public places. Health authorities are increasing testing and preparing hospitals to manage any potential surge in cases.
Experts emphasize that while the new variants spread quickly, they are not more severe than previous strains. The World Health Organization has classified JN.1 as a Variant of Interest, not a Variant of Concern. Doctors advise the public to remain calm but vigilant, continue practicing good hygiene, wear masks in crowded areas, and get tested if symptoms appear.
