Pune: On Monday, resident doctors at the Post Graduate Institute-Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (PGI-YCMH) in Pimpri initiated a strike after relatives of a patient attacked a few junior resident doctors. This strike impacted the outpatient department (OPD) and emergency services at PGI-YCMH, which is under the management of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), according to officials. According to officials, the incident took place around 12:40 am on Monday in the hospital's emergency ward. Pimpri police reported that the accused, identified as Sharvin Norman Arlen, 23, and his father, Norman Lairus Arlen, 48, residents of Moshi, accompanied the patient, Riya Patil, an assault victim, to PGI-YCMH. They urged the treating doctor, Dr. Naresh Shivanand Anjanadevi, to document serious injuries on paper, but Dr. Anjanadevi recommended a CT scan to assess the severity of Patil's injuries. The father-son duo became agitated when they refused to undergo the CT scan and assaulted Dr. Anjanadevi. Police Sub-Inspector Ganesh Aatwe, stationed at the Pimpri police station, stated that Dr. Anjanadevi was slapped during the altercation, and when Dr. Atharva Kokaje attempted to intervene, the father-son duo proceeded to throttle him. "The duo has been charged under sections 353, 323, 504, 506, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Both accused have been arrested and presented in court. The court has remanded them to police custody for a day, and further investigation is ongoing," Aatwe reported. Dr. Anjanadevi and Dr. Kokaje, both junior resident doctors at PGI-YCMH, were involved in the altercation. Subsequently, around 120 resident doctors at the hospital initiated a strike from 9:30 am on Monday, urging for a comprehensive revamp of security protocols within the hospital premises. Dr. Anjanadevi has filed an FIR at the Pimpri police station concerning the matter. Dr. Rajendra Wabale, the dean of PGI-YCMH, mentioned that in response to the incident, resident doctors have initiated a strike, and efforts are being made by authorities to persuade them to return to their duties. "We are implementing security enhancements, including the recruitment of additional security personnel at the hospital. Senior resident doctors have been enlisted to minimize inconvenience to patients during the strike," Dr. Wabale stated.
