Artificial Intelligence (AI) may enhance healthcare operations, but it cannot take the place of doctors in providing genuine care and treatment, said Prof. Govindan Rangarajan, Director of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.
Delivering the inaugural address at the graduation ceremony of Christian Medical College (CMC), Prof. Rangarajan noted that fears about AI replacing doctors are misplaced. While AI can analyse medical data, detect patterns, and handle administrative work such as billing, it lacks the emotional intelligence and compassion that define human healthcare.
He explained that empathy and communication are key aspects of the doctor-patient relationship, which no machine can replicate. “Patients feel more comfortable sharing their concerns with human doctors,” he said, adding that such human qualities give doctors a clear advantage over technology.
Encouraging young medical graduates to focus on research, Prof. Rangarajan highlighted the value of continuously engaging with medical literature. This, he said, helps professionals make informed choices between commercially promoted products and evidence-based treatments.
During the ceremony, 108 students were awarded their degrees. Prof. Rangarajan also presented the best outgoing student award to Esha Joe, in the presence of CMC Principal Solaman Satish Kumar.
