Doctors at Amrita Hospital in Faridabad, Haryana, recently performed life-saving surgeries on two siblings who accidentally swallowed toy magnets. The three-year-old boy, Pragyan, was admitted on August 12 with severe stomach pain and persistent vomiting. Scans revealed multiple foreign objects in his intestines. During surgery, doctors discovered ten magnets clamped together, causing tears in eight places and seriously damaging the duodenum, part of the small intestine.
Only a day later, Pragyan’s four-year-old sister, Hitanshi, was admitted with similar symptoms. Doctors found six magnets in her stomach, which had led to multiple holes and tissue death inside her stomach cavity. Dr. Nitin Jain, the senior pediatric surgeon who treated them, described magnets as a “silent killer.” He explained that unlike objects like coins, multiple swallowed magnets can attract each other inside the body and pinch tissues between them. This cuts off blood supply, leading to tissue death, holes in the intestines, infection, and potentially sepsis.
The surgeries were complex and required precise imaging with a C-Arm fluoroscopy machine to guide the removal and reconstruction of the damaged digestive tract. Thanks to these advanced techniques and quick medical response within a 48-hour window, both children survived and began their recovery.
