Doctors in Japan are raising concerns about a growing trend of people — especially younger adults — using a diabetes medication called Mounjaro to try to lose weight, despite the drug being approved only for treating type-2 diabetes. Mounjaro helps control blood sugar by stimulating insulin production, and it also suppresses appetite, which has led some people to seek it out at clinics for aesthetic weight loss rather than for medical need.

While the appetite-reducing effect can lead to body-weight reduction, diabetes specialists warn that many users underestimate the potential health risks and side effects, such as gastrointestinal symptoms and other complications that haven’t been fully evaluated in people without diabetes. Physicians emphasize that using a prescription medication outside its intended purpose without proper medical oversight can be dangerous.

Experts also note that these kinds of drugs belong to a class called GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonists, which are under study globally both for diabetes and obesity treatment. Medical research suggests that while they can significantly reduce weight and improve metabolic markers, they may also cause nutrient intake issues or muscle loss if not carefully managed alongside diet and exercise.

In Japan, regulatory approval for weight-loss indications is limited, and doctors urge caution. They recommend that people focus on established weight-management strategies such as balanced nutrition and physical activity, and consult healthcare professionals rather than turning to medication for cosmetic weight loss.
