In a groundbreaking medical achievement, doctors at Jupiter Hospital in Pune have successfully treated a 12-year-old boy suffering from a rare spinal condition. The boy, referred to as Divyansh, had been experiencing back pain, difficulty walking, and loss of bladder control for nearly three years. He was diagnosed with congenital thoracic kyphosis, a condition caused by the fusion of two vertebrae (T4 and T5), leading to a bony hump pressing against his spinal cord. Without timely intervention, Divyansh faced the risk of permanent paralysis.
On April 11, a team led by spine surgeon Dr. Pramod Lokhande performed a full endoscopic internal gibbectomy, a minimally invasive procedure that required only a 1 cm incision. Using an 8 mm endoscope, they carefully removed the bone pressing on Divyansh's spinal cord while preserving the stability of his spine. Remarkably, within 12 hours of the five-hour surgery, Divyansh was able to walk without support. He was discharged from the hospital on April 16 and has since made a full recovery.
This case is believed to be the first of its kind globally, showcasing the potential of endoscopic spine surgery in treating complex spinal deformities with minimal invasiveness. Traditional open surgeries often involve large incisions and the use of rods and screws, but this approach avoided such measures, reducing trauma and promoting faster recovery. Dr. Lokhande emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and intervention in such cases to prevent irreversible damage.
