The state cabinet of Punjab has approved empanelment of 300 specialist doctors across 12 major medical disciplines — including Medicine, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Chest & TB, Surgery, Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, ENT and Anaesthesiology — to serve in government health facilities.
The selected specialists will be appointed at district-level under the supervision of civil surgeons and will be paid on a per-patient basis for services such as OPD consultations, IPD care, emergency duties, and major or minor surgeries.
This initiative aims to address the long-standing shortage of specialist doctors in Punjab’s public health system, thereby strengthening secondary-level healthcare services across the state.
The empanelment follows previous efforts — including redeployment of retired specialists on a contractual basis — due to difficulty in recruiting younger doctors in several disciplines.
