In a rare medical case, doctors at the Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialities (AIMSS) in Shimla successfully removed a two-rupee coin that had been stuck in a 23-year-old woman’s food pipe for 15 years. The woman, from Chamba district, had accidentally swallowed the coin when she was in Class II.
For years, she had trouble swallowing solid food and had visited several hospitals both within and outside Himachal Pradesh. However, doctors were unable to remove the coin due to its position in the esophagus. Recently, she was admitted to AIMSS, where a team of specialists led by Dr. Brij Sharma, Dr. Rajesh Sharma, Dr. Vishal Bodh, and Dr. Ashish Chauhan decided to attempt the removal.
Using advanced endoscopic equipment, the team managed to take out the coin without surgery. Doctors said that the new medical tools provided by the state government made the complex procedure possible and safe.
The patient recovered well and has now been discharged from the hospital. According to doctors, she will soon be able to eat all types of food without difficulty.
