Kozhikode has achieved a major milestone by becoming a model district in Kerala for the scientific disposal of unused and expired medicines. Through a well-coordinated waste management program, the district successfully collected and disposed of 27.5 tonnes of expired drugs in an eco-friendly manner.
The initiative, implemented in collaboration with the Kerala Medical Services Corporation and local self-government bodies, ensures that expired medicines from households, hospitals, and pharmacies are collected systematically and disposed of safely without harming the environment.
Special collection bins have been placed at various public health centers, making it easier for citizens to deposit unused or expired medicines. The collected waste is then scientifically treated to prevent soil and water contamination.
Officials emphasized that this model project aims to create greater public awareness about the dangers of improper disposal of pharmaceuticals. Kozhikode’s success is expected to inspire other districts in Kerala to adopt similar eco-conscious practices for safeguarding public health and the environment.
