Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis recently shared his view on how artificial intelligence (AI) might transform healthcare roles. He said that AI tools are strong in handling medical data such as scans, test results, and patient histories. These capabilities could allow AI systems to assist with or even replace some of the diagnostic and planning tasks usually done by doctors.

Hassabis explained that nurses cannot be replaced by machines. Nursing involves emotional support, physical care, and human empathy, which no AI or robot can truly provide. While a robot may deliver medicines or monitor patient vitals, it cannot give the comfort and human touch that patients need.

He also spoke about a future where AI and humans work together in hospitals. AI could take over repetitive or data-heavy tasks, while human staff can focus on building relationships with patients and solving complex problems. Hassabis also highlighted the need for training healthcare workers so they can adapt to this AI-supported environment.
